About

Lithography, engraving, and color printing changed the book long before the advent of digital editors. Art historian Polina Evstafieva will show how 19th-century technologies influenced illustration, advertising, and magazine graphics, and how Victorian experiments prepared the language of modern design and visual communication. The 19th-century book evolved alongside the printing press. New technologies allowed for faster reproduction of images, working with color, and producing large print runs. Illustration ceased to be a rare addition to the text and became an important part of the publication's composition. In the lecture, Polina Evstafieva will demonstrate how technical processes influenced the appearance of books, magazines, and advertisements of the Victorian era. Listeners will explore the differences between engraving, lithography, and chromolithography. A separate section will be dedicated to the ideas of John Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites. Their focus on craftsmanship, nature, and expressive detail influenced the design of publications and the perception of the book as a cohesive artistic object. The lecture will trace the transition from Victorian decorativeness to the principles that later became the foundation of graphic design.
