The history of Russian pavilions at the Venice Biennale - a conversation about how art speaks on behalf of the country. Participants will trace the path from Diaghilev and Shchusev to the projects of the 2000s and 2010s, discussing cultural dialogue, self-education, and the change of eras. Through exhibitions, the names of artists, and the architecture of pavilions, one can see how perceptions of Russia, its cultural role, and ways of communicating with the world in the language of images have changed. The meeting will examine the path from Sergei Diaghilev's exhibition in 1907 and the opening of the pavilion designed by Alexei Shchusev to the 2000s and 2010s. The focus will be on different eras of self-representation: imperial culture, Soviet project, nonconformist art, and contemporary artistic practices.
