About

The lecture and workshop will help authors bring dialogues to life and avoid the feeling of "talking heads." Participants will analyze how a character's personality influences their reactions, words, and intonations, why dialogue is necessary for the plot, and how to convey conflict, mood of the scene, internal logic of characters, and movement of the text through lines. Dialogue in prose can easily become the weakest point of the text. Characters may speak correctly, grammatically, and even beautifully, but still sound the same, as if one author is responsible for all of them. Such a scene quickly turns into a puppet show: lines come one after another, action freezes, and the reader stops believing in the characters. The practical meeting is dedicated to how to avoid this artificiality. The main idea of the session is that a lively dialogue is born from a well-thought-out character. If the author understands who is in front of them, what the character fears, what they want, how they are used to defending themselves, arguing, joking, or being silent, their speech becomes more precise. Words, pauses, slips, sharpness, caution, and favorite phrases begin to work for the character, rather than hanging in the text separately from it. The meeting will be conducted by Alexander Sordo - writer, editor, and reviewer. Where to go in St. Petersburg today, look for on our website.
