About

One of the most unusual films of late Soviet cinema will serve as a reason to talk about the visual language and anxieties of the era. The lecture will analyze how horror connects with auteur cinema, the role of Sergey Kuryokhin's music, and why this film still leaves a strong and strange impression. Soviet cinema of the 1980s increasingly broke out of conventional genre frameworks, combining psychological drama, mysticism, grotesque, and visual experiments. In this meeting, one of the most unusual films of the decade will become material for discussion on how the language of the screen changed and why it was precisely at the end of the Soviet era that such a dark and aesthetically bold film could emerge. Special attention will be given to the genre nature of the film. It is often referred to as one of the first Soviet horrors; however, the fear here arises not from a set of familiar techniques, but from a sense of unstable reality, anxious images, and constant uncertainty. The visual environment, character traits, and the very logic of what is happening work towards a feeling of unease that gradually intensifies. A separate topic will be the music of Sergey Kuryokhin. It plays an important role in the perception of what is happening, heightens tension, and helps to build a special rhythm of the narrative. We will suggest where to go for free in St. Petersburg.
