About

The lecture will examine age not as a number in a passport, but as a social category that influences rights, self-perception, and self-attitude. Age often seems like an obvious characteristic: it is recorded in documents, linked to rights, responsibilities, and the expectations of others. But behind the simple number lies a complex system of ideas about who is considered a child, an adult, or an elderly person. The conversation will focus on how age categories shape self-perception and a person's place in society. Why does the term "young adults" require protection? How does age abstraction work, and why can it become a form of social and legal discrimination? Particular attention will be paid to adulthood and childhood as processes of subjectivation. The lecturer is Nikita Dobryakov, a historian of philosophy, art critic, and author of books on the history of art. Our website features the current program of Saint Petersburg.
