The history of Jewish emigration to the USA spans several eras, continents, and cultures. Sephardic merchants, Ashkenazi craftsmen, Bukharan, Mountain Jews, and Mizrahi - each of these communities contributed to the formation of the Jewish diaspora in the New World. The lecture at the Foreign Literature Library will discuss the intersection of traditions, clashes of mentalities, and the preservation of cultural identity. How did the lives of Jewish immigrants in the USA unfold? Were there distances between waves of migrants? How did the disasters of the 20th century, including the flight from Nazism, affect this history? Historian and philosopher Tatyana Ilarionova will analyze the key milestones in the establishment of the Jewish community in the USA, talk about the professions chosen by the first migrants, and discuss current trends in professions, business, and science. A separate part of the lecture will be dedicated to social and cultural phenomena - discrimination, religious freedom, assimilation, and the preservation of traditions.
