About

The lecture "Echo of a Thousand Islands" is an intellectual and visual trip through the tropical rhythms and images of the Indonesian archipelago. What do Lord Byron and the volcanoes of distant Indonesia have in common? How did David Bowie draw inspiration from the folklore of Southeast Asia, and why did Claude Debussy hear in gamelan the music of the future? These and other questions will serve as the starting point for an exciting journey through Indonesia. Listeners will discover how the myths, rituals, and landscapes of Indonesia became part of Western poetry and painting, how the traditional music of the islands influenced the work of European composers, and what connects Nikolai Gumilyov to the cultural codes of this mysterious country. Guests of the lecture will conduct an investigation that changes the usual perception of Indonesia. The vibrant presentation and lively narration will make the event interesting for both art enthusiasts and lovers of unconventional perspectives on history. The lecture will be conducted by Karen Kasabyan, a student at ISAA MSU and a researcher of cultural dialogue.
