About

Natalia Kortunova will discuss how interiors and facades became metaphors for loneliness, comfort, and protest in 20th century art - from Matisse and Hopper to pop art and the artists of the Nabi group. The genre of interior, despite changes in artistic paradigms, retained its significance in the works of outstanding masters. The French Nabi group erased the boundaries between art and everyday life, creating not only paintings but also applied objects. For Matisse and Picasso, the depiction of the interior became a reflection of their personal lives. For Hopper and Wyeth, it was a way to speak about alienation, loneliness, and social isolation. The lecture at the Arsenal offers a new perspective on the role of the image of the house in the visual arts of the past century. Natalia Kortunova, a senior researcher at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, will explain how 20th century artists rethought space, interior, and exterior as symbols of their time.
