About

Filmmakers know how much a hat can tell about a character. Fedora, bowler, ushanka - each headgear can reveal the hero's character when approached correctly. Headgear in cinema is often not just an accessory. Try to imagine Indiana Jones without his fedora, Chaplin without his bowler, or "Peaky Blinders" without flat caps - and the images immediately lose their power. In the lecture by art historian Ekaterina Bychkova, participants will discuss how hats are used in films: why they are so important for visual storytelling, what cultural meanings lie behind them, and how they sometimes help tell more about the hero than the dialogue.
