The dam protects St. Petersburg from flooding. Engineer Alexander Kizik will explain how the KZS was created over more than 30 years, where its design was calculated, and how the complex holds back the sea element. For centuries, St. Petersburg has lived with the threat of flooding, so the idea of protecting the city from rising waters arose long before the modern complex was built. However, turning the concept into a functioning system was only possible thanks to decades of calculations, research, and construction. Engineer and local historian Alexander Kizik will discuss how the concept of the KZS was formed and what challenges the designers had to solve. A separate part of the conversation will be dedicated to the batopurt - a movable gate that blocks the shipping channel in case of a flood threat.
