The Russian theater has often turned to Shakespeare's tragedies and comedies, but this late play has remained on the periphery of the repertoire. The conversation about how it nevertheless entered the Russian stage tradition, what disputes it provoked, and why it still offers directors such room for interpretation is all the more interesting. The lecture will focus on the history of productions of "The Tempest" throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Special attention will be paid to two characters-Prospero and Ariel. Their complex relationship largely determines the tone of the performance, its emotional texture, and its meaningful accents. Participants will be able to trace how the perception of these characters has changed and why the conflict between power, dependence, freedom, and forgiveness sounds different each time. Which directors have effectively rediscovered this play for the Russian audience? What will happen if the role of Prospero is given to a woman? Is it possible to turn Shakespeare's text into a starting point for free theatrical improvisation while preserving its artistic power?
