About

Nostalgia for the 1990s, loud guitars, and eternal brotherly disputes - this lecture examines the phenomenon of Britpop through the history of Oasis. Listeners will learn how a band with working-class roots became the voice of British streets, and how the scandalous antics of the Gallaghers became part of the myth of an entire musical era. The discussion of songs and characters will rekindle a lively interest in them. In the mid-1990s, British charts were filled with guitar bands writing songs about suburbs, the pub around the corner, and the everyday lives of ordinary families. Against this backdrop, the band Oasis shot to fame: children of a working-class Manchester, who dreamed of playing like their heroes from the 1960s and became a benchmark for the next generation. In the lecture, cultural expert and musicologist Timofey Chaplyuk analyzes how a group from a poor neighborhood transformed into one of the symbols of Britpop. The talk will cover early singles, the albums "Definitely Maybe" and "(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?", and why seemingly simple melodies are so easy to remember, while lyrics about Northern England turn into stadium anthems. Ideas on where to go in Yekaterinburg are gathered on our website.
