This is a lecture about the composer who spoke of the holiday in the language of chorales and symbols. The English composer Benjamin Britten is a subtle, reflective, and multifaceted figure. He returned to the theme of Christmas again and again, filling his music with reflections on fragility, meaning, and light. The theme of Christmas inspired Britten from a young age. During World War II, he created the cycle "A Ceremony of Carols," weaving Gregorian motifs, ancient texts, and the breath of eternity into the sound of harp and choir. Here, Christmas is not a fair or a tradition, but an inner journey. Later, in the work "The Journey of the Magi" based on the poems of T.S. Eliot, he shifts the focus to the theme of the road-a difficult one, full of doubts. Birth in this interpretation is a premonition of suffering, but also illumination. Maria Ladygina's lecture is a story about Britten's choral and spiritual music as a way to speak to the world in the language of compassion, memory, and hope. An important part of the lecture will be the analysis of scores and diary notes that allow a glimpse into the composer's working process. Fragments of compositions, comments from the composer himself, as well as the unfinished trilogy from the last years of his life, which reveals another facet of his Christmas concept, will be examined.
