Participants will embark on an intellectual journey into the depths of meaning hidden behind the iconography. The lecture by Mikhail Pozdnev, Doctor of Philological Sciences and Professor at St. Petersburg State University, is dedicated to one of the most mysterious works of Italian painting of the 16th century - the painting "Allegory of Faith" by the artist Alessandro Bonvicino, known as Moretto da Brescia. This masterpiece was created at a turning point in the history of Western Christianity - on the eve of the Council of Trent, when the church stood on the brink of a profound schism. The central element of the canvas is the inscription iustus ex fide vivit - "the righteous shall live by faith" - which is read in a new light in the context of Luther's reformist ideas. Its meaning evokes multifaceted interpretations. One of them emphasizes the Catholic spirit of the work - as Moretto created it for representatives of the official church.
