About

The lecture concludes a series on spaces in Soviet cinema and focuses on the late Soviet 'empty zones' - strange territories beyond the calibrated everyday life. Using examples from the films of Abdrachitov, Averbakh, and Shakhnazarov, participants will analyze how the screen created a sense of anxious out-of-place-ness and internal escape. Late Soviet cinema often depicts the city as a system of understandable routes, courtyards, institutions, and residential areas. However, in the films of the 1970s and 1980s, strange ruptures increasingly emerge within this order - spaces where characters retreat from familiar everyday life. These zones appear almost anomalous: they do not always conform to the logic of daily life and become places of internal failure, expectation, or resistance. The lecture will explore the topography of stagnation and perestroika films, where space ceases to be a simple background. Listeners will attempt to decode the poetics of 'out-of-place-ness'. Through the films of Vadim Abdrachitov, Ilya Averbakh, and Karen Shakhnazarov, participants will see how cinema captured the transformation of environment and moods. We will discuss how to organize leisure in St. Petersburg.
