How has the art of the 20th and 21st centuries influenced fashion, and why do designers repeatedly turn to the works of artists? This course reveals the dialogue between the two spheres. The program traces how different artistic movements have shaped the visual language of fashion. From Art Deco and Constructivism to Pop Art and Street Art - each era offered its own ideas that designers adapted into clothing, accessories, and shows. The focus is not only on iconic names like Coco Chanel or Yves Saint Laurent but also on modern brands that continue this dialogue. Lecture 1. "Art Deco in Art and Fashion" (April 2) The discussion will focus on the style of the 1920s and the image of the new woman. Participants will trace how geometry, decorativeness, and the aesthetics of modernism were reflected in architecture, painting, and fashion. "Bauhaus, Constructivism, and Their Influence on Fashion and Modern Designers" (April 16) The discussion will center on the ideas of modernism and Soviet Constructivism. Projects of "Prozodezhdy" and textile developments by Stepanova and Popova, as well as the influence of Bauhaus on textiles, architecture, and modern design will be reviewed. Lecture 3. "Surrealism and Fashion" (April 30) Participants will learn about the collaboration between Salvador Dalí and Elsa Schiaparelli, the influence of surrealism on photography and the runway. "Pop Art in the Collections of Designers from the 1960s and 1970s and Modern Designers" (May 14) The lecture will be dedicated to pop art as a source of vibrant visual culture.
