About

The curatorial tour will tell how in the 1960s, residents of Sverdlovsk began to discover foreign travel. At the center are suitcases, routes, questionnaires, currency, souvenirs, and stories of people for whom going abroad was an event that required long preparation, strict rules, and vivid impressions that lasted almost a lifetime. Today, a trip abroad often starts with a ticket in an app and a couple of clicks, but for a Soviet person, such a journey looked completely different. Behind the right to see another country stood recommendations, checks, scheduled routes, limited currency exchange, and a special set of things that one was supposed to take with them. Maria Beklenishcheva's tour helps to explore this topic not through dry statistics, but through specific human stories. The project is dedicated to how the residents of Sverdlovsk in the 1960s began to travel abroad. The tour will discuss how Soviet foreign tourism differed from today's travels and why the very possibility of crossing the border became an important part of one's biography. Participants will learn what selection they had to go through, who could expect a trip, and how the route was formed after all the approvals.
