Two soloists and a piano construct the program so that familiar pages and rare compositions come together in a flexible, vibrant, and very thoughtfully crafted musical journey. The concert is particularly interesting as it showcases the flute not in one familiar role, but in several. Here it sounds as a singing, virtuosic, dramatic, and chamber-focused instrument. The program is structured so that the listener can hear both a grand romantic line and the elegance of salon fantasy, as well as strict baroque speech and delicate French plasticity. Because of this, the evening turns out to be diverse in mood, yet internally very cohesive. The program features Carl Reinecke, Shō Wada, Johann Sebastian Bach, Paul Taffanel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Gabriel Fauré, and Francis Poulenc. This selection is especially good for a festival format: it brings together rarely performed elegies, famous pages of the flute repertoire, and a transcription of Bach's Chaconne - a piece that in itself requires great internal concentration and almost architectural thinking from the soloist. No less important is Bach's Partita in A minor, which allows the flute to be heard without accompaniment - in the most open and demanding form. The romantic line is set by Reinecke's Ballade, Taffanel's fantasy on themes from "The Free Shooter," and Fauré's Fantasy. In these compositions, the beauty of the long phrase, the flexibility of breath, and that type of virtuosity where technique exists for the sake of intonation and character are particularly noticeable. Poulenc's sonata adds another temperament - more nervous, witty, and agile. Thus, the program constantly changes scale and perspective, preventing the listener from tiring of a uniform sound.
