About

Music from the early 20th century, passionate and sarcastic, tender and urban, will be performed in one program. im Spiegel explores the connections between Ravel, Satie, Stravinsky, and Poulenc to show how the era of change, love for technology, and nostalgia for a lost world sounded. The anniversary of Maurice Ravel inspired the ensemble im Spiegel to create not just a chronological concert, but a musical portrait of the time when the whole world was rapidly changing. The program features compositions by Ravel himself and his contemporaries, close to him in spirit - from the ironic Satie to the experimental Stravinsky. The evening opens with "Introduction and Allegro" - a light and spring-like piece by Ravel for harp, flute, clarinet, and strings, created on private commission. It is followed by Satie's biting miniatures titled "Dried Embryos" - musical parodies that combine elegance and audacity. The lyrical line is supported by Fauré's "Sicilienne," and then the program sharply turns towards technogenic modernism: Poulenc's "Walks," inspired by machine euphoria, and Stravinsky's pseudo-jazz in "Piano-rag-music". Particular interest is drawn to Honegger's "The Railway" - a musical study on the theme of industrial rhythm, written in an era of worshipping speed and mechanics. The concert will conclude with Ravel's piano trio - one of his most poignant works, written on the eve of World War I. Performing are the musicians of the ensemble im Spiegel - Mikhail Turpanov, Elizaveta Seselkina, and David Yezhov. The ensemble is known for its intellectual programs, where academic music becomes a way to discuss complex issues through the language of subtle sound meanings. Their concerts are always a work with context, delicate direction, and attention to historical background. This evening will suit listeners interested in early 20th-century European academic music, its multilayeredness, provocations, and psychological depth. A meeting with Ravel and his circle here is an opportunity to hear the voice of the era.
