About

Music inspired by drama will come to life in the Capella hall performed by the symphony orchestra and reading actors. The concert of the symphony orchestra of the Capella of St. Petersburg, conducted by Ivan Stolbov, will unite music and literature, theater and symphonic drama. This time in focus are the masterpieces of Lope de Vega and Edmond Rostand, reinterpreted in the scores of Aram Khachaturian and Georgy Portnov. Khachaturian's work was written in 1940 for the stage of the Moscow Theater named after the Lenin Komsomol. "The Valencian Widow" captivates from the first notes with sincerity, temperament, and subtle irony. The composer created a piece where Spanish passion meets genre sketches, lyricism, and vibrant dance episodes. The piece has gained an independent life in the form of a concert suite and continues to be successful in symphonic programs. The music of Georgy Portnov will sound based on the play "Cyrano de Bergerac," staged in 1987 at the Leningrad Drama Theater. Fifteen years later, the composer returns to the material and creates a new symphonic suite with the participation of readers. He focuses on feelings, psychological depth, and the subtle intertwining of text and musical fabric. Such nuances will be conveyed in this concert. A special place in the program is occupied by the participation of reading actors: Sergey Barkovsky, Zhanna Kupriyanova, and Vitaly Kovalev. Their interpretations of literary fragments not only accompany the music but become a part of it. Text and sound work equally here, creating a lively, multi-layered perception. The author of the program is musicologist Larisa Popkova. She also acts as the host, directing the listeners' attention and helping to understand the composers' and playwrights' intentions more deeply. Our website features the current poster of St. Petersburg.
