Created in 1834 based on Schiller's tragedy, this opera tells the fate of the Scottish queen caught in the center of political intrigues and personal drama. The confrontation between two women - Mary and Elizabeth - reveals not only a conflict of interests but also an internal struggle between feeling and duty, faith and ambition, honor and fear. The history of the production of this opera is dramatic in itself: the premiere at "La Scala" ended in scandal and censorship, and the role of Maria was performed by the legendary Maria Malibran, who insisted on including previously cut scenes. Subsequent bans deprived the public of the opportunity to hear this work for a long time, and it was only in the 20th century that the path to its return to the stage began.
