A large-scale spiritual composition connects sorrow, bright hope, and the power of choral sound, revealing the ancient text through the personal pain of the composer and a rare emotional openness for academic music. Antonín Dvořák's spiritual cantata occupies a special place in academic music: behind its solemn scale lies a personal story. The composer turned to the ancient text "Stabat Mater" after the death of his newborn daughter Josefa and saw in the image of the grieving Virgin Mary a reflection of parental pain, love, and hope. Dvořák's work does not confine itself to a gloomy tone. It features a movement from sorrow to enlightenment, from concentrated experience to faith in the future. The 10 parts allow for a gradual passage through different states without losing the integrity of the grand design. The program will be performed by soloists, the Choir, and the Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Cappella under the direction of Ilya Derbilov.
