The concert of the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra conducted by Yuri Demidovich will offer the audience an evening filled with sound contrasts and vivid emotions. Works by Shostakovich will be performed - ranging from lyricism to satire, from solemnity to irony. The music of Dmitri Shostakovich is a whole universe of emotions, allusions, and meanings, where the solemn coexists with the grotesque, and the deeply personal with the grand public. On this evening, selected works by the composer will be performed on the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall by the symphony orchestra under the direction of Yuri Demidovich. The project will feature five vocalists: soprano Maria Bayankina, mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Sergeeva, tenor Alexander Fyodorov, basses Bakuri Kalichava and Alexander Koryakov. The concert program is designed to showcase Shostakovich in various manifestations. On one hand, the audience can expect the "Festive Overture" - a powerful and solemn gesture capable of bringing any hall to its feet. On the other hand, a delicate, penetrating romance from the film "The Scorpion", one of the most recognizable musical fragments of the 20th century. A special mood will be created by Waltz No. 2 and the finale from the Suite for Variety Orchestra - light, ironic, and danceable. Also, the concert will feature the Piano Concerto No. 2 - a work that combines virtuosity, bright melodiousness, and light parody. The cycle "From Jewish Folk Poetry" will reveal the depth and tragedy of the folk feeling, conveyed with incredible precision. And, of course, the audience will hear the satirical cantata "Anti-Formalistic Paradise" - a work full of humor, hidden hints, and musical jokes, composed as a response by the composer to ideological persecutions.
