Late works by Schumann will be performed by an orchestra celebrating its anniversary. The evening will unite violin and cello concertos, a symphony, solo variations, and rare scores for piano with orchestra. It is a chamber confession and philosophical reflection transformed into a powerful musical gesture. There is music that appeals to feelings, and there is music that addresses the depths of consciousness. The works written by Robert Schumann at the end of his life sound like an internal monologue: agitated, reflective, tense. This program gathers compositions in which the composer's voice sounds particularly sincere and vulnerable. The violin concerto, completed in 1853, had not been performed for a long time. Too complex for perception, it seemed to have been ahead of its time. Now it is read as a riddle, full of hints, internal fragments of phrases, and at the same time - as a statement devoid of ostentatious effects. The cello concerto, created a few years earlier, is full of trust and inner warmth. It is a dialogue without masks, almost a diary entry, in which one can hear both bright sadness and hope. The solo piano part of the program includes a cycle of variations - "Geistervariationen", or "Ghost Variations". It is believed that this music was recorded by Schumann under the influence of sounds that arose in his imagination. It is filled with silence between the notes, as if the composer was trying to capture the very process of his disappearance as an artist. Also to be performed are the Introduction and Concert Allegro for piano with orchestra - rare works in which the desire to combine virtuosity and symphonic development is felt. The evening will conclude with the Fourth Symphony - tragically powerful and at the same time refined. The violin part will be performed by Leonid Zhelezny, the cello by Vasily Stepanov, and the piano by Yakov Katsnelson. Conducting will be Anton Lubchenko. The Governor's Symphony Orchestra of St. Petersburg will perform. The concert is included in a large anniversary cycle dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the ensemble and will be one of the deepest musical events.
