Lacrimosa is an essential part of the mass, including the requiem. The most famous Lacrimosa belongs to Mozart, and it is the lyrical center of his Requiem, which, according to the composer, he wrote for himself. Just a day before his death, Mozart attempted to sing "Lacrimosa" with friends but could not, breaking down in tears from the overwhelming emotions. The piece "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from Edvard Grieg's suite "Peer Gynt" is a vivid and imaginative sketch from Norwegian fairy tales and legends. Listeners seem to join a fantastic procession of trolls that leads them into a majestic cave where the king resides.
