About

The Saint Petersburg Singing Chapel will perform a program dedicated to the 110th anniversary of Georgy Sviridov. That evening, spiritual and secular choirs will be presented - from poetic miniatures to large-scale philosophical reflections in sound. This event will unite the delicacy of form and the power of sound, vividly demonstrating how polyphony can convey the deep meanings of Russian music. Georgy Sviridov is a figure without whom the development of Russian choral music in the second half of the 20th century cannot be imagined. He reinterpreted the folk tradition and transformed it into a rich palette of modern choral works, weaving together spirituality, philosophy, national color, and a deep sense of poetic word. Choral art in Sviridov's interpretation is not just music, but an attempt to express the human soul through the means of polyphony. The composer utilized centuries-old experience of Russian singing culture, combining it with new expressive means. As a result, works emerged that not only preserve tradition but also develop it. Among them are both secular and spiritual choirs, cycles on verses by Russian poets, and philosophical reflections in sound. One of the most significant contributions of the composer is the creation of a new form of choral concert, in which each voice gains individuality while remaining part of a cohesive sound. The evening's program includes both well-known and rarely performed compositions, demonstrating a breadth of imagery: from songs about nature and everyday life to complex spiritual reflections. A special place is occupied by the cycle "Hymns and Prayers," written at the end of his life. This is the culmination of his creative path, recognized by the State Prize. Although Sviridov did not directly address liturgical practice, his compositions had a significant influence on church choral singing of the new time. The participants of the evening - the Saint Petersburg Singing Chapel under the direction of Nikolai Kurbatov - will present a program that showcases the full power, lyricism, and depth of Sviridov's musical language. The event will be interesting.
