About

Ancient Byzantine chants, Athonite melodies, and rare footage of monastic life come together in a cohesive stage performance, where the sound of the choir is perceived almost tangibly. On this evening, the stage will transform into a space of attentive listening, where music exists not as a background, but as a living spiritual tradition that has passed through the centuries. The program is built around the Byzantine choral heritage and Easter hymns, meaning the listener is in for a meeting with intonations that combine strictness, inner strength, and the special beauty of ancient church art. The performance will be complemented by photo and video materials related to the life of Mount Athos, so the impression will be formed from sound, word, and image. The team from the Nikolai-Malitsky Men's Monastery in Tver preserves the Athonite tradition of Byzantine singing and is engaged in its study and dissemination. This is especially valuable for the general public, as such a concert provides an opportunity to hear not a stylization or external reconstruction, but a careful work with authentic material. Here, every detail is important - the chant, the structure of intonation, the prayerful breath of the phrase, the special cohesion of the overall sound. The program features the brightest examples of Byzantine liturgical music. Lenten and Easter hymns will be performed, including the supplicatory canon to the Mother of God "Speedy Helper," as well as a particularly sung fragment from the Gospel. This composition makes the evening interesting for both those who are already familiar with the church singing tradition and those who are just beginning to listen to it. The music unfolds gradually here: first, the unusual sound fabric captivates, then the subtlest shades begin to differentiate, and afterwards comes the feeling of inner silence and concentration. The history of the choir began in 2018. Some members of the collective lived for a long time on Athos and absorbed the local singing culture directly from everyday monastic practice. This gives the performance weight and authenticity that cannot be replaced by academic training alone.
