About

The flute orchestra from Moscow organizes a musical debate of eras: from Bach and Handel to Bartók, Gershwin, and Piazzolla. When a whole orchestra of flutes gathers on stage, the usual perception of classical music shifts slightly. The audience sees not just one solo instrument, but a whole spectrum of timbres: from the transparent sound of the piccolo to the rich baritone register. This palette becomes the material for a program where Bach and Handel, Saint-Saëns, Bartók, Chaminade, Gershwin, Piazzolla, and Chark are side by side. The concert is structured as a journey through styles and moods. Baroque music sets a strict pattern and a clear line, onto which later compositions are strung. Works by 20th-century composers bring a jagged rhythm, jazz intonations, tango, and unexpected harmony into the hall. The flute in this context turns out not to be a fragile soloist, but a flexible storyteller, equally convincing in both an ancient suite and urban jazz. Behind the project is the Moscow Flute Orchestra, uniting competition winners, teachers, and graduates of the conservatory and the Gnessin Academy. The ensemble is conceived as a laboratory for those who are used to working seriously but are not afraid to experiment with form. The collective has managed to establish itself with programs that combine different eras and genres, making encounters with it interesting for both experienced listeners and those who are just beginning to explore classical music. The artistic director of the ensemble, Natalia Osipova, is known as a teacher and expert in wind instruments. Her experience working with young musicians helps to structure the concert so that each member of the ensemble sounds meaningful, and the overall fabric does not fall apart into separate numbers. Here, the external effect is not important; what matters is the sense of breathing of a single organism, where a phrase is born in one group and logically continues in another.
