Solemn festive music and the profound depths of spiritual tradition will unite in one program. Bach's monumental composition will be performed alongside a rare liturgy by Grechaninov - chamber, intimate, full of subtle shades and contradictions. One evening - two dissimilar yet equally significant poles. At the end of December, the Choir and Orchestra of the Capella of St. Petersburg, conducted by Nikolai Kurbatov, will perform a program that unites Western European and Russian academic traditions. The first part will feature Bach's Magnificat, while the second will present Alexander Grechaninov's "Demean Liturgical". Composed in 1723, the Magnificat was Bach's first major work after his appointment as cantor of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. This position obliged him not only to teach and rehearse but also to create new music. On his first Christmas in this role, Bach presented the Magnificat - a festive, emotionally rich score for choir, soloists, and large orchestra. The grandeur with which the choral scenes unfold, the powerful fanfares, and the shining melismas all testify to the solemnity of the event. Over time, Bach revised the composition, changing the key and removing the Christmas inserts, making it possible to perform the music at any solemn worship service. Despite its concise form, the Magnificat is perceived as a grand and emotionally layered work. In the second part, listeners will encounter a rare example of spiritual music from the Silver Age. Written in 1917, the "Demean Liturgical" was originally conceived as a chamber work for home performance but was later expanded by the composer. In the 1923 version, it includes choir, orchestra, organ, harp, and celesta. This work remained outside official church practice for a long time due to its unusual musical form. Among the soloists are Vladimir Miller and Oleg Trofimov. The proclamations will be performed by Alexander Orlov and Vadim Silenok. The organ part will be led by Yuri Semyonov.
