About

The State Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan, conducted by Alexander Sladkovsky and featuring pianist Angel Wong, combines in one program Britten's sea pictures, a vibrant piano concerto, and the grand Fourth Symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich, creating a cohesive dramatic cycle. The evening's program is structured like a large symphonic arc, where each composition sets its own type of tension. It begins with "Four Sea Interludes" from Benjamin Britten's opera "Peter Grimes" - music in which the landscape and the inner drama of the hero are intertwined particularly closely. The orchestra paints fleeting misty colors, sharp gusts, and almost static episodes, where time seems to stand still. The change of episodes is perceived as a series of cinematic inserts, where the sea sometimes appears as an ally and sometimes turns into a merciless element. Next, attention shifts to the piano concerto by the same composer. For the soloist, this piece becomes a space of constant dialogue with the orchestra: rapid passages, complex rhythmic patterns, and instantaneous contrasts make the part almost theatrical. At the same time, the music does not lose Britten's characteristic subtle irony and sense of fragility, hidden beneath the external energy. Sladkovsky shapes the sound in such a way that no voice dominates completely, and the texture remains transparent and readable. In the second part of the concert, Dmitri Shostakovich's Fourth Symphony will be performed - one of the most grand and contrasting works of the composer. In this piece, grotesque, sharp marches, almost circus-like intonations, and prolonged tragic episodes coexist. The orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan showcases the entire palette of shades: from icy alienation to extreme expression. Long climaxes require concentration and endurance from the musicians, and readiness from the listener to accept maximum emotional directness. The program will be hosted by music critic Artem Vargafitik, whose comments help focus on important details of the score and hear.
