Two major works for soloists with orchestra meet in one program - Brahms for violin and Prokofiev for cello. This evening is built on the contrast between a noble romantic line and the tense musical dramaturgy of the 20th century, so the listener can expect a bright, rich, and very vivid impression. This evening is particularly interesting because it features two large-scale works for solo instruments with orchestra at its center. First, Johannes Brahms's Violin Concerto will be performed - music of great breath, where technical complexity is always subordinated to inner integrity, beauty of line, and dense symphonic thought. Then, Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony-Concerto for Cello and Orchestra will be performed - a composition of a completely different nature, more nervous, sharp, and dramatic. Such a combination makes the program especially advantageous. On one hand - Brahms with his grandeur, rich orchestral texture, and rare balance between lyricism and strength. On the other - Prokofiev, whose cello leads a complex, tense conversation with the orchestra, constantly changing intonation, temperament, and degree of internal tension. The listener has the opportunity to hear in one evening how differently composers understand the genre of large instrumental expression. The soloists will be Alexander Poltoratsky and Vasily Stepanov, accompanied by the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Andrey Kolyasnikov.
