About

Music can tell about a time just as well as a portrait. At this meeting, academic melodies of the Romantic era will sound alongside the history of costume: how the black tailcoat appeared, why white gloves are needed, what was considered elegant and daring. The story is accompanied by video imagery and paintings, while the live sound is provided by soloists of the choir and orchestra. How to understand an era if it has no time machine? Sometimes it is enough to hear how its dream sounded - and to see what it wore. This concert-talk connects academic music and the history of fashion: the conversation about style goes parallel with live performance, and the video sequence of costumes and stories captured in paintings helps to assemble a complete picture of the century in one’s mind. The host is musicologist Larisa Efimova. She explains in simple words why Romanticism loves long melodies, sharp mood swings, and intimate whispers instead of loud declarations. Silhouettes, fabrics, and etiquette details appear on the screen, while the music responds to them with soloists from the choir and the Symphony Orchestra of the Capella: the timbre becomes as expressive a sign of the era as the cut and color. We tell on our website where to go with children in St. Petersburg.
