The Stradivari Ensemble of the Mariinsky Theatre combines the sound of rare string instruments from the 17th-18th centuries with works from different eras. An evening with the Stradivari Ensemble of the Mariinsky Theatre introduces the possibilities of the string orchestra and the rare sound of instruments created by great Italian masters of the 17th-18th centuries. The musicians play on instruments by Niccolò Amati, Antonio Stradivari, Giuseppe Guarneri, Giovanni Battista Guadagnini, and Matteo Goffriller. The program features works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Igor Stravinsky, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Benjamin Britten. Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 and Piano Concerto No. 1 showcase the elegance of Baroque music, while 20th-century compositions reveal new facets of string sound. The soloist and conductor will be Lorenz Nasturica-Gershovich, who has been leading the ensemble since 2013. Pianist Polina Yeryomina will also participate in the concert. We share ideas on where to go in St. Petersburg this weekend.
