About

The book club is dedicated to Freud's essay "The Uncanny." Guests will discuss the unsettling feeling that arises when something familiar suddenly becomes frightening. The meeting is part of the parallel program of the exhibition "Chimera." Participants in the discussion will explore the German word unheimlich, which literally means "uncanny," but evokes anxiety precisely because it seems both familiar and frightening. This definition can apply to mannequins, animated objects, doppelgängers, and any items that disrupt the usual boundary between the living and the inanimate. Reading the essay "The Uncanny" in advance is recommended, but lack of preparation will not be a hindrance: some excerpts will be read aloud. It will be interesting for those who are passionate about literature, philosophy, psychoanalysis, contemporary art, and themes of the strange in culture. The mediator of the meeting will be Maria Kuznetsova - a linguist, foreign language teacher, and psychotherapist. For other events in Moscow, check KudaGo.
