About

Silent cinema is not just Chaplin, Keaton, and Roscoe Arbuckle. It also includes dozens of directors with a unique authorial style and a multitude of funny, captivating, and poignant stories. To allow viewers to get closer to the era of silent cinema, the "Illuzion" regularly hosts the cycle "The Forgotten Silent." As part of the retrospective cycle dedicated to early cinema, viewers will be presented with a drama from the early 1920s, associated with the name of ballerina and actress Vera Karalli. For the star of pre-revolutionary cinema, this work became one of her last after emigration: abroad, she appeared in only a few films, and this particular film held a special place in her later career. The film was created in Berlin, where many Russian emigrants worked at that time, actively participating in the development of the German film industry. The director was Robert Wiene - the author of the famous expressionist hit about Dr. Caligari. After the loud success of the previous work, the new film was received with restraint by critics, who considered it more traditional; however, the Russian press, on the contrary, enthusiastically praised Karalli's performance, noting her expressiveness and emotional depth. The plot is based on a novella by the French writer Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly and tells the story of a mysterious woman whose confession reveals a tale of a cruel marriage and calculated revenge. The film has survived in a single copy, which is housed in the Russian State Film Fund, making each screening a rare event. Before the screening, the film will be introduced by a film scholar, and the demonstration will be in the original language with Russian subtitles and using a 35 mm film copy. The film is screened as part of the "Forgotten Silent" cycle. More details can be found on the "Illuzion" website.
