About

German drama by Christian Petzold transforms the story of a car accident into a subtle exploration of memory and attachment. Pianist student Laura finds herself in a stranger's home, where strangers gradually become closer than family, and several quiet days change each viewer's perception of love, loss, and their own future. The story begins with an ordinary country trip that suddenly turns the heroine's life upside down. Laura, a young pianist from Berlin, miraculously survives an accident and ends up in the home of an unfamiliar woman. There is no hospital hustle and loud diagnoses - instead, she is surrounded by care, a warm dinner, and silent participation. Gradually, Laura's life includes the host's husband and her adult son, and four people, connected by the will of chance, begin to share their everyday life as if it had always been this way. Christian Petzold constructs this story without sharp turns and loud gestures. A glance is more important than a line, a pause is more important than an explanation. The German drama in his interpretation is an intimate space where every gesture carries weight and any mundane action sounds louder than words. There are no familiar clichés about trauma and miraculous healing on screen: everything relies on nuances, on how the characters make coffee, fix things around the house, listen to the piano playing behind the wall. In these details, the pain of loss, the desire to hide from the past, and the simultaneous fear of losing fragile peace manifest. Performers Paula Beer, Barbara Auer, Matthias Brandt, and Enno Trebs create vivid, contradictory images, where there is no black-and-white division. The viewer observes how attachment, jealousy, and guilt arise between the characters, and gradually understands that each one here is trying to piece themselves back together. The music that Laura aspires to remains for her both a profession and a way to articulate what is difficult to say aloud. The screening at "Lenfilm" is complemented by an introduction from film critic Vasily Stepanov. His comments help to see the hidden motives of actions, to catch the director's work with space and light.
