About

Jean-Luc Godard's film brings back the daring energy of the French New Wave to the big screen. The story of Ferdinand and Marianne's escape transforms into a vibrant, nervous, and ironic conversation about freedom, love, fatigue from bourgeois order, and the price of a life without rules, where romance coexists with danger and absurdity. Jean-Luc Godard turns a crime story into a free flow of color, music, quotes, and sudden intonations. Ferdinand is tired of marriage, work, and a neatly arranged life where every movement seems preordained. The encounter with Marianne promises a sharp exit from the familiar circle: the heroes abandon their previous roles, get into a stolen car, and head south to France. But the road, which initially appears as a romantic escape, quickly becomes fraught with danger, crimes, chases, and a troubling sense that true freedom does not come easily. The screening in the original language with Russian subtitles helps to feel the rhythm of the film more accurately: the characters' speech here is as important as their gestures, glances, and sudden pauses. Jean-Paul Belmondo and Anna Karina lead this duet on the edge of comedy, noir, melodrama, and philosophical play. Their characters argue, flirt, and seem to enact their own myth of love and rebellion. Raoul Coutard's camera captures their movement almost physically: the sea, roads, bright colors, newspaper headlines, and snippets of pop culture come together to form a vivid portrait of the era.
