About

The festival of Japanese culture offers a new perspective on modern pop culture by exploring its roots through mythology, ancient manuscripts, and original prints. Guests will be able to immerse themselves in Eastern aesthetics and uncover the origins of familiar images. Discounts on tickets are available! The festival is dedicated to five centuries of Japanese culture. Visitors will journey from samurai and kimono to anime and robot cafes. Festival guests can expect interesting and unusual artifacts and art objects. Among them is a copy of the 12-meter scroll of Tōjūgiga from the 12th century (which marks the beginning of the comic book history), as well as a copy of Hokusai's famous "The Wave" and original prints from the 19th century. A separate space will be dedicated to traditional clothing - kimono, some of which can even be tried on. Guests will also see samurai armor, visit a tea house and a rock garden, and learn about Asian mythology. The festival pays great attention to modern Japanese pop culture, which has spread across the globe. Here, one can trace the evolution of comics and anime, learn about the role played by Leningrad artist Yuri Vasnetsov in Japanese animation, and how Fyodor Dostoevsky influenced comics. Guests will be able to see original studio footage with directors' notes, including footage from "Sailor Moon", as well as a comic book with 21,540 pages - the book was released in only 50 copies, and its spine length is over 80 centimeters. A special exhibition is dedicated to the evolution of comics in the style of Eastern countries in Russia, showcasing a comic project about the explorer of the Far East, Gennady Nevelskoy, created with the support of the presidential grant fund. Additionally, the festival will feature lectures on oriental studies, culture, and languages of Asian countries, demonstrations, workshops, and other events. The curators of the festival are orientalists from the Higher School of Economics (Moscow). For more details, visit the official website.
