About

The tour of the Turgenev Library-Reading Room is an opportunity to look into the past and learn how the first public free library in Moscow was formed. Founded in 1884 thanks to a generous donation from Varvara Morozova, Turgenevka became a symbol of open access to knowledge and culture. The tour will begin with a story about the library's first building and then transport participants to the atmosphere of the current home - an urban estate from the 17th to 19th centuries, where Turgenevka found new life. Guests will be able to stroll through halls with unique architecture, learn about the features of the book collection and cultural projects that the library is implementing today. Participants will also get acquainted with the modern capabilities of the reading room - from the media library to interactive programs. The tour will be conducted by Natalia Nehaichik - a leading librarian and media library staff member. This event is suitable for anyone interested in the history of Moscow, architecture, book culture, and those who love to discover new facets of familiar places.
