About

Sennaya holds dozens of grim stories about crimes, poverty, and underground life. This walk will showcase the area through the fates of its inhabitants, criminal legends, and urban secrets. During the tour, participants will learn how Sennaya influenced the development of the Russian detective police, where thieves' dens and night shelters were located, why some alleys were considered dangerous even for the police, and how huge fortunes were made in local trade. The route will pass through streets and courtyards connected to the stories of cardsharps, fences, taverns, and underground establishments. Special attention will be given to Stolyarny Lane, the "drunken corners" of the Soviet era, and the urban legends that have surrounded this area for decades. The tour will be conducted by Dmitry Cherepanov - a native of Leningrad, an urban environment researcher, and a participant in informal youth associations of the 1980s, who has been studying the history and everyday life of Petersburg for many years. Participants will be provided with radio guides with individual headphones.  Meeting point - Sennaya Ploshchad metro station (near the Chapel of Spas-na-Sennoy). Registration can be done on the website of the House of Culture of Lev Lurie. What to see in St. Petersburg will be suggested by KUDAGO.
