About

Petersburg has long been surrounded by legends about Freemasons, secret societies, and hidden signs in the city's architecture. The walk offers a look at the topic without mystification - through the history, art, and cultural context of different eras. The route will go from Kazan Cathedral to the Academy of Arts. Participants will see details of facades and decorative elements that are often associated with Masonic tradition, as well as learn how such images appeared in the urban environment and why their interpretation causes so much debate. During the tour, the origins of Freemasonry in Europe and Russia will be discussed, its connection to science, architecture, the era of Paul I, and the Decembrist movement. Special attention will be given to popular myths and the reasons why so many conspiracy theories still arise around the topic. The tour will be conducted by Alexander Dedinkin - an art historian and architectural historian. Participants will be provided with radio guides with individual headphones.  Meeting point - the monument to Mikhail Barclay de Tolly (in front of Kazan Cathedral). Registration can be done on the website of the House of Culture of Lev Lurie. What to see in St. Petersburg will be suggested by KUDAGO.
