About

In the Rare Book Hall, you can see ancient editions and learn how the Turgenev Library was created. Antique books help to see the library as a living organism. The collections hold editions related to the first decades of the Turgenev Library, its founder Varvara Alexeyevna Morozova, and the cultural environment of Moscow at the end of the 19th century. During the tour, visitors will get acquainted with books purchased with Morozova's funds, as well as other interesting specimens from the 19th century. A separate part of the tour is dedicated to Varvara Morozova herself. Participants will see a copy of her portrait painted by Konstantin Makovsky in 1884 - precisely during the period when she was involved in creating the Turgenev Library. Through Morozova's fate, it becomes clearer what patrons were like in Russia: they supported education, culture, public spaces, and sought to make knowledge accessible to everyone. The tour will be conducted by Elena Nikolaeva, head of the Rare Book Department and Memorial Work. If you don't know where to walk in Moscow, visit KudaGo.
