About

40 years ago, the explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant changed the world - but the myths surrounding the disaster live on. The tour at the Boris Yeltsin Museum will separate truth from myth: through the fates of people, the initial response of the Soviet authorities, and long legal processes - towards an honest conversation about one of the major tragedies of the last century. April 26, 1986 - a date known to the whole world. The explosion at the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant became one of the largest technological disasters in human history. But why did it happen - and why, forty years later, are there still so many myths, speculations, and conflicting versions surrounding it? A combination of negligence, systemic errors at all levels of government, shortcomings in the construction and operation of the plant, as well as a chain of tragic coincidences - all of this ultimately led to a disaster that could have been prevented. A fatal role was also played by the Soviet culture of silence. The tour "Truth and Myth of Chernobyl" at the Boris Yeltsin Museum is an attempt to honestly and without simplifications understand what happened. Participants will learn the history of Soviet nuclear energy through specific fates: scientists and engineers who opened and built a new industry, liquidators who faced invisible danger, and officials who long concealed the scale of the tragedy from their own people and from the world. Each of these stories is a separate human drama within a larger catastrophe. Where to go in Yekaterinburg, KudaGo knows.
