About

The Alexander Nevsky Lavra is one of the most unusual monasteries in Russia, where the traditions of old Russian monasteries merge with the architectural ideas of the new imperial capital. The walk will provide a glimpse into the country's past through the history of the monastery. During the tour, participants will learn why the monastery ensemble is unlike other Russian lavras and how foreign architects gave it features of European Catholic monasteries. The discussion will cover the long construction of the Trinity Cathedral, changes to the monastery complex over three centuries, and how political and cultural shifts in the country were reflected in the lavra. Special attention will be given to the internal structure of the monastery and its architectural details. The route also includes a visit to the Nikolsky Cemetery, where notable figures in science, culture, and public life are buried. The tour will be conducted by Alexander Burov - senior researcher at the Museum of the History of Religion. Participants will be provided with radio guides and individual headphones.  Meeting point - Nevsky Prospect, 179 (near Lavrovsky Passage). Registration is available on the website of the Lev Lurie Culture House. What to see in St. Petersburg will be suggested by KUDAGO.
