The Russian writer Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) was a victim of intense anxieties and showed in his Diary of a Madman - published in 1834 - the development of a clinical picture compatible with what today would be called schizophrenia. It narrates the story of a bureaucrat who, through the various humiliations he suffers, experiences erotic and insane disorders.
