About

A colorful adventure ballet by Adolphe Adam, staged by choreographer Mikhail Messerer. The romantic ballet by composer Adolphe Adam is based on the poem of the same name by Byron. Corsairs were the sea pirates who operated until the 19th century in the interests of the French king, capturing enemy ships. Adolphe Adam, the founder of romantic ballet, created music that reflects the drama of Byron's plot. The original version of the ballet was later supplemented with new scenes, for which music was written by Leo Delibes, Riccardo Drigo, César Pugni, Ludwig Minkus, as well as Russian composers Pyotr Oldenburgsky, Nikita Trubetskoy, and Anton Simon. Despite this, the storyline remained unchanged and fully preserved its original form. In the plot, the corsair Conrad kidnaps the slave girl Medora, whom he loves. But her master, Isaac Lankedem, cunningly manages to return the girl and sell her to the Pasha Seid. Conrad, along with his corsair friends, sneaks into Seid's palace, rescues Medora, and boards a ship with her. The ship wrecks, but the heroes survive and make it to a rocky shore. The ballet at the Mikhailovsky Theatre was staged by the famous choreographer Mikhail Messerer. The choreography is based on the works of Marius Petipa and Konstantin Sergeyev. The performance runs with two intermissions. For more performances in St. Petersburg, visit our website in the theater section.
