About

A truly Russian ballet that marked a new era in Soviet choreographic art. Pavel Bazhov, the author of the eponymous tale, is a Russian folklorist and talented writer who translated many fascinating stories heard in childhood into literary language. Not everyone remembers the tale of the Queen of the Copper Mountain and the stonecutter Danila, whose happiness is shattered by the rude and drunken clerk Severian, but everyone who has read or watched numerous adaptations surely remembers their feelings; the story seems to be perceived by the heart. Both the libretto and the music for the ballet "The Stone Flower" were written by Sergei Prokofiev, and the premiere took place at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1957. At that time, the entire elite of Soviet choreography gathered to work on the ballet. Prokofiev was the composer, Yuri Grigorovich was the director, and Simon Virsaladze was the designer and costumer. Naturally, such a creative trio could produce nothing but a quality performance. And considering that iconic artists like Maya Plisetskaya and Ekaterina Maximova danced in it, it becomes clear that the spectacle was indeed worth watching. The Musical Theatre has carefully preserved the traditions of the original production, and today the audience can once again see the performance in all its splendor. See even more performances on our website in the theatre section.
