About

A ballet to the music of Ludwig Minkus, infused with Indian mysticism and exoticism, is one of the oldest performances in the Russian repertoire. The ballet, choreographed by the great Marius Petipa, tells a story of the quest for freedom and human happiness against the backdrop of mesmerizing Indian scenery. Although the production, created in the late 19th century, encompasses all the most common notions of India as a land of elephants, lotuses, and dancers, it avoids clichés. The main focus of the ballet is the psychological lines and relationships between the three central characters - the temple dancer (bayadère) Nikiya, the valiant warrior Solor, and the head of the temple (the great Brahmin). The lead role is performed by Moscow native Polina Semionova, who portrays a heroine full of inner dignity. Her dance lacks overt Orientalism; it is quite strict and devoid of excessive affectation. Nikiya, as performed by Semionova, captivates with her restraint, and her trio with the artists of the Mikhailovsky Theatre is very harmonious. The nobility of the Brahmin and the passion of Solor are emotional impulses that Semionova masterfully captures. The most outstanding moments of the performance include the grand corps de ballet from the final act in the kingdom of shadows and the monologue of the great Brahmin - passionate, candid, and full of fire.
