Valery Gavrilin's ballet with choreography by Vladimir Vasiliev is a dance interpretation of Chekhov's story "Anna on the Neck." The performance was originally created as a television ballet featuring stars Vladimir Vasiliev and Ekaterina Maximova. The idea was proposed and realized by Leningrad director Alexander Belinsky together with Vasiliev. The musical basis consisted of assembled fragments from various works of Gavrilin. The television premiere aired in 1982, won various awards, and captivated audiences far beyond the borders of the Soviet Union. In Italy, the director of the San Carlo Theatre saw the television ballet and suggested moving it to the stage. A significant reworking was required for the stage performance, yet the ballet retained the most important aspect - the lyrical-dramatic action, in which every movement is subordinated to the dramaturgy. The stage premiere took place in Italy in 1986. Since then, the ballet has gained worldwide recognition and has become very popular in Russian theaters.
